AN EVERYDAY QUESTION

How to Break a Bad Habit

Most habits do not appear for no reason.

They usually become part of ordinary life quietly.

Something you do when you are tired.

Something you reach for when you are stressed.

Something that makes the moment easier.

Something you barely notice anymore.

And eventually, something you wish you did less often.

The first instinct is often to focus on stopping.

But before asking how to stop a habit, it can help to understand what keeps bringing you back to it.

01 — NOTICE

Notice what happens before the habit

A habit rarely exists completely on its own.

There is often something around it.

A time of day.

A feeling.

A place.

A person.

Stress.

Boredom.

A familiar routine.

Instead of beginning with blame, try beginning with curiosity.

When does this habit usually happen?

What am I often feeling just before it?

What does the habit give me in that moment?

Understanding the pattern can be more useful than simply fighting it.

02 — CLARIFY

Do not try to change everything at once

When a habit starts to bother us, it is easy to turn the whole situation into a personal overhaul.

Be more disciplined.

Start a better routine.

Remove every temptation.

Become a different person.

But a habit does not always need a dramatic solution.

Sometimes the useful question is much smaller.

What is one situation where I could make this habit a little less automatic?

What could I do differently in that moment?

A small interruption can be enough to create a little more choice.

03 — DIRECTION

Change begins with noticing

You do not need to have perfect self-control.

And slipping back into an old habit does not erase what you have noticed.

The more clearly you see the pattern, the easier it becomes to recognize the moment when you actually have a choice.

Notice the habit. Notice the moment. Then decide what you want to do next.

That can be enough to begin.
